7 κανθός
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `corner of the eye' (Arist., Nic., Gal.); poet. `eye' (hell.); acc. to H. also `opening in the roof for the smoke, Rauchfang, καπνοδόκη' and `pot, kettle, χυτρόπους' (the last Sicilian).Derivatives: From here the hypostasis ἐγκάνθιος `which is in the κανθός' (Dsc., Gal.) with ἐγκανθίς f. `tumour in the inner angle of the eye' (Cels., Gal.), acc. to Poll. 2, 71 = `inner corner of the eye'; also ἐπικανθίς `id.' (Hippiatr., v. l. in Poll. l. c.). Deriv. κανθώδης `rounded' (Call. Fr. 504 coni. Hemsterhuys; codd. καθν-, κυκν-).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Not well explained. From κανθώδης in Callimachos to conclude to a original meaning `curve\/-ing' is not allowed. - One compares Celtic words, e. g. Welsh cant `iron band, brim', Gall. (Gallo-Rom.) * cantos, and a Panslavic word for `corner, angle (of a farm) etc.', e. g. Russ. kut, all from IE. * kan-tho- from a root IE. kam- in καμάρα, κάμπτω, but this root is not given in Pok. and κάμπτω (s.v.) is Pre-Greek. Thee comparison is not without poblems, first because Gr. - θ- remains unexplained, second because the Slavic words are suspected to come from the west (s. below). From Celtic comes Lat. cantus `iron band (of a wagon wheel)', from where the Romanic words for `brim, corner etc.' (Fr. chant etc.) and Germanic, NHG Kante, which are irrelevan here. - Speculative Belardi Rend. Acc. Lincei 8: 9, 610ff. (also Doxa 3, 209); his material must be sifted. - Cf. Pok. 526f.), W.-Hofmann s. cantus, Vasmer Russ. et. Wb. s. kut. - So there is no IE etymology; and an IE pre-form is impossible (*kh₂n̥dh- would hace given *καθ-). So the word is Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 1,777-778Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κανθός

8 μῆνιγξ
μῆνιγξ, - ιγγοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `skin, cuticle', esp. `cerebral membrane' (Hp., Arist., Gal.), also `cuticle in the eye' (Emp., Arist.),'drum of the ear' (Arist.).Compounds: As 1. member a. o. in μηνιγγο-φύλαξ m. indication of a chirurgical instrument (medic.).Derivatives: Dimin. μηνίγγιον (gloss.); NGr. μηνιγγῖτις f. `inflammation of the cerebral membrane', Fr. méningite (Redard 103 f.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: As so many technical and popular formations in -( ι)γγ- etymolog. unclear. Since Prellwitz μῆν-ιγγξ is referred to *mē[m] s-n-, beside which μηρός \< *mē[m] s-r-; the basis would be the word for `flesh', IE *mē[m]s- in Skt. māṃsá-, mā́s- n. etc. (s. μηρός). On the meaning cf. some Slav. words for `inner part of the skin, inner, soft skin etc.', e.g. SCr. mézdra, Sloven. mę́zdra, beside Russ. myazdrá `flesh on the inner part of the skin', to OCS męso, Russ. mjáso `flesh' (= Skt. māṃsá-; s. Vasmer s.v.). Similar Lat. membrana `thin, soft skin' from membrum `limb of the body'. - Evidently a Pre-Greek word in - ιγξ.See also: Weiteres s. μηρός.Page in Frisk: 2,228-229Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > μῆνιγξ

13 Perception
Perception is the immediate discriminatory response of the organism to energy-activating sense organs.... To discriminate is to make a choice reaction in which contextual conditions play a deciding role. (Bartley, 1969, pp. 11-12)t seems (to many) that we cannot account for perception unless we suppose it provides us with an internal image (or model or map) of the external world, and yet what good would that image do us unless we have an inner eye to perceive it, and how are we to explain its capacity for perception? It also seems (to many) that understanding a heard sentence must be somehow translating it into some internal message, but how will this message be understood: by translating it into something else? The problem is an old one, and let's call it Hume's Problem, for while he did not state it explicitly, he appreciated its force and strove mightily to escape its clutches. (Dennett, 1978a, p. 122)Perception refers to the way in which we interpret the information gathered (and processed) by the senses. In a word, we sense the presence of a stimulus, but we perceive what it is. (Levine & Schefner, 1981, p. 1)[W]henever we do try and find the source of... a perception or an idea, we find ourselves in an ever-receding fractal, and wherever we choose to delve we find it equally full of details and interdependencies. It is always the perception of a perception of a perception. (Varela, 1984, p. 320)Historical dictionary of quotations in cognitive science > Perception
